The
Hazel Hotel is on the Dublin Road in the historic town
of Monasterevin which lies on the scenic river Barrow
and the Barrow Line Canal and has a population of 3,500.
It is named after the 6th century St Evin who
established a monastery here.
It is a town of many bridges, the oldest being the Ballagh
or Pass Bridge. The town is often called the "Venice of
Ireland" as from one point twelve bridges can be seen at
once. The enjoyable canal walk from Monasterevin to
Rathangan is suitable for all ages.
The local stretches of river and canal are well known for
excellent game and coarse fishing. Monasterevin has an
award winning riverside park which was officially opened
by Mary Robinson, the then President of Ireland.
The 34 mile drive from Dublin takes approximately 50
minutes
Places of interest include: Moore Abbey, site of the 12th century Cistercian
Abbey and once home of Count John McCormack, the famous
tenor.
